A Note from The Professor:
In North America, Hydrostatic Pressure is normally measured in pounds per square inch or psi. In Europe, Asia and other parts of the world, the pressure is measured in Bars. MWD tools have a 20,000psi rating.
One of the most important concepts when dealing with hydraulics as it applies to the MWD tool is that the pressure is felt equally throughout a system. The water or mud that is pumped downhole is called drilling fluid. Drilling fluids exert Hydraulic Pressure in all directions inside the drill pipe - on its way downhole & against the formation & outside of the drill pipe - on its way uphole.
Hydraulic Pressure - can be calculated using this formula: Pressure = .052 * Drilling Fluid Weight * TVD
